Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, is listing her mother’s 340-acre Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., estate for $65 million.
The sprawling oceanfront compound features more than a mile of Atlantic beachfront and has for decades been preserved as a wildlife sanctuary. Kennedy Onassis acquired the Aquinnah compound, known as Red Gate Farm, through attorney Alexander D. Forger in 1978 for $1.1 million, the Vineyard Gazette reported at the time.
Should the sale close for a $65 million price, it would double the record for the most-expensive single-family home sale on Martha’s Vineyard, according to The Wall Street Journal. The sale of an island estate formerly owned by late Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham holds the current record of $32.5 million, the newspaper reported.

In a statement, Caroline Kennedy said the estate was “a perfect expression” of her mother’s “romantic and adventurous spirit.”
“The dunes and ponds and rolling hills of Aquinnah gave her the chance to create a world where she could be so close to nature, close to her family and friends, and, most importantly, close to her beloved books,” Caroline Kennedy said in a statement. “She even built a fairy treehouse for her grandchildren. Those grandchildren are grown so now it is time for us to follow my mother’s example and create our own worlds. We hope that a new family will treasure this place as we have for three generations. We are excited about the next chapter for Red Gate Farm.”
The estate features a single-family home that was built in 1981. Hugh Newell Jacobsen designed the main residence in a traditional Cape Cod style, while horticulturist Bunny Mellon — who designed the White House Rose Garden while Kennedy Onassis was First Lady of the U.S. — designed the landscapes. Nearly two decades later, Deborah Berke, the dean of the Yale School of Architecture, renovated and expanded the estate in the same style.
