Apple Inc. (AAPL) will launch the “most powerful Mac ever made” on December 14, just in time for Christmas.
The company first discussed plans to release a new iMac Pro desktop computer at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, but only recently confirmed the launch date on its website. In its post, Apple said the new iMac Pro will retain the slim, all-in-one design of its predecessors, despite packing some of the most powerful tools available. It described the computer as a “lean, mean dream machine.” (See also: Apple to Upgrade iMacs With Pro Hardware This Year.)
Key additions include an Intel Corp. (INTC) Xeon processor with up to 18 cores, up to 128 GB of memory, a 27-inch Retina 5K display, a space grey-colored finish and one terabyte of storage configurable up to two or four terabytes. The iMac Pro is also set to feature a new dual centrifugal fan system designed to create more airflow and Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s (AMD) Radeon Pro Vega graphic chip, described as over three times faster than any previous iMac graphic processing unit.
Apple will give customers the choice to buy the iMac Pro with an 8-, 10-, or 18-core processor. The entry level version will retail at $4,999.
“Pros love iMac. So when they asked us to build them a killer iMac, we went all in,” Apple said on its website. "And then we went way, way beyond, creating an iMac packed with the most staggeringly powerful collection of workstation-class graphics, processors, storage, memory, and I/O of any Mac ever."
The company added: “And we did it without adding a millimeter to its iconic all-in-one design. So everyone from video editors to 3D animators to musicians to software developers to scientists can do what they do like they’ve never done before. Introducing iMac Pro. A lean, mean dream machine.” (See also: Apple Reveals More Details About Self-Driving Efforts.)
The launch of a new iMac Pro comes at an important time for Apple. The company is keen to continue winning over its core audio and visual professionals customer base and prevent rivals from stealing away its market share in the desktop market. That has become an even bigger priority now that Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) announced its first all-in-one computer, the surface studio.
