Despite the Bank of England publicly recognising the huge threat posed by climate change, it has been slow to support or stimulate a much needed transition to a greener economy.

Our new paper, ‘A Green Bank of England’, will set out why and how the Bank of England should be hardwired for sustainability. It shows how the Bank’s mandate urgently needs to be reformed so that both monetary policy and financial regulation tackle climate change head on.

At the launch event, Positive Money Economist Rob Macquarie will introduce the report, with responses from a panel including Chair of the Committee on Climate Change Lord Deben, the Liberal Democrats' Energy and Climate Change Spokesperson, Baroness Featherstone, and Labour’s Catherine West MP, plus more speakers TBC.

Central banks have a privileged position at the heart of the financial system, with enormous resources at their disposal. Yet so far the Bank of England has inadvertently supported high-carbon sectors through its corporate bond purchases. The Bank of England should be supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our new paper sets out how it can do this.
