The suspect in the YouTube headquarters shooting in San Bruno on Tuesday afternoon opened fire on three victims with a handgun before killing herself, according to law enforcement and hospital officials.
San Bruno police Chief Ed Barberini told reporters that gunfire rang out in a courtyard inside the complex near Cherry Avenue and Bay Hill Drive shortly before 1 p.m. Barberini said four people were transported to the hospital, including one victim with a twisted or broken ankle.
The three gunshot victims were rushed to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, where Dr. Andre Campbell said the shooting echoed recent gun violence in San Francisco and across the nation.
“You’d think that after we’ve seen Las Vegas, Parkland, the Pulse nightclub shooting, that we would see an end to this, but we have not,” Campbell told reporters gathered outside the hospital. “This is a terrible day in the U.S. when once again we have a multiple casualty situation that has confronted us here.”
Less than two weeks ago, a police shootout in San Francisco injured five and left the suspected gunman dead at a barbershop in the Excelsior.
Brent Andrew, a hospital spokesperson, said the latest gunshot victims are a 32-year-old woman in serious condition, a 27-year-old woman in fair condition and a 26-year-old man in critical condition.
The suspect has yet to be identified and it is not known whether she was an employee at the headquarters, according to Barberini.
Barberini said officers arrived at 901 Cherry Ave. at 12:48 p.m. and immediately began searching the building. They found one victim with an apparent gunshot wound near the entrance, and two additional victims at a nearby business.
“It was very chaotic, as you can imagine,” Barberini said.
Barberini said law enforcement was still working to search and clear the building in a “slow and methodical” manner this afternoon.
Todd Sherman, a product manager at YouTube, said on Twitter that he heard a rumbling that turned out to be people running, and then saw blood on floor.
I looked down and saw blood drips on the floor and stairs. Peaked around for threats and then we headed downstairs and out the front.

Another employee, Vadim Lavrusik, tweeted that he heard shots and saw people running. He barricaded himself inside but was later able to escape.
Active shooter at YouTube HQ. Heard shots and saw people running while at my desk. Now barricaded inside a room with coworkers.

Google issued a statement around 2:30 p.m. saying that employees in the building were being asked to shelter in place.
We continue to actively coordinate with local authorities and hospitals. Our Security team has been working closely with authorities to evacuate the buildings and ensure the safety of employees in the area.

Juan Lezama was one of many with family and friends in the YouTube headquarters who were counting their blessings after hearing the shooting turned fatal.
Lezama said he works in the area but had multiple friends in one of the buildings on the campus who texted him that they had heard gunshots. Minutes later, they were told to walk out slowly with their hands up on their heads.
Mayor Mark Farrell issued a statement noting the shooting was the latest in “a string of tragedies.”
“The time for more common sense gun safety and control policies has long since passed,” Farrell said. “There have been nearly 60 mass shootings this year alone in our nation. We should demand that all of our elected leaders — especially our President — do something to respond to this national crisis.”
President Donald Trump remarked on the shooting in the afternoon.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved,” Trump said on Twitter. “Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene.”
Was just briefed on the shooting at YouTube’s HQ in San Bruno, California. Our thoughts and prayers are with everybody involved. Thank you to our phenomenal Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders that are currently on the scene.
