The largest Facebook page purporting to be part of the Black Lives Matter movement has been exposed as a fake.
The page, which had more than 700,000 followers and solicited donations for the cause has been linked to an Australian union official, Ian MacKay, reports CNN.
It says fundraising activity promoted on the page “brought in at least $100,000” and “at least some of the money” was redirected to Australian bank accounts.

All fundraising associated with the page has been suspended, with PayPal and Patreon closing the campaigns after being contacted by CNN.
In 2015, MacKay also allegedly created and owned a separate site called blackpowerfist.com, which was set up as a discussion forum and encouraged members to make donations.
The Guardian reports that MacKay and another National Union of Workers official have been suspended by the organisation, “pending the outcome of an investigation”.
