Social media networks Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram were down worldwide on Sunday, with users unable to refresh their feeds on the platforms for roughly two to three hours.
Facebook – which owns all the three platforms – later apologised for the outage.
“Some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps. The issue has since been resolved, we’re sorry for any inconvenience,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement to The Verge.
According to downdetector.com, issues began at around 6.30am eastern time (around 2.30pm UAE time).
In the UAE, while some users reported receiving messages sporadically on WhatsApp during the downtime, many took to Twitter to complain about the outage on the other networks.
Meanwhile ride sharing app Careem – which was recently acquired by Uber – also leveraged the incident to offer discounts to users with a promo code ‘FBIGWADOWN’.
