Poll: Majority of Voters Support Abolishing Electoral College

A majority of voters now support eliminating the Electoral College in favor of electing presidents by popular vote, according to a new poll.

About 53 percent of voters would scrap the Electoral College system in favor of the popular vote, while 43 percent prefer the status quo, according to the NBC News-Wall Street Journal survey released Monday.

Democrats, who have seen their presidential nominee win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote twice (2000, 2016) in the last two decades, have recently championed sweeping election reforms, both in the House and on the 2020 presidential-campaign trail. Republicans have resisted those efforts, arguing that they represent a partisan attack on the constitutional order.

Unsurprisingly, then, Democraticwere much more likely to support abolishing the Electoral College than Republicans. Seventy-nine percent of Democrats said presidents should be elected by popular vote, while 74 percent of Republicans said the current system should be kept.
