Foundation for Sustainable Development/Priscilla Ong’ayo: A WORLD OF GOOD: Kakamega, Kenya

Hello my Friends!

A very warm hello from Kakamega. It has been a wondrous, challenging — and transformational — first year as Program Director for me.

Here in Kenya, change is everywhere. The best news is that last year we saw a greater increase in tourism than in any other country worldwide. In May, a $13 billion Chinese-financed railway system opened, it promises to bring even more visitors to our country than ever before.

This said, the recent political situation has caused a downturn in our economy that makes life harder for many among us. So please believe me when I say that FSD’s projects have never been more needed or timely.

This is especially true for the rural poor and marginalized Kenyans, and many local agencies have faced crushing shortfalls. That’s why Duke University intern Gina Daniel’s work with our partner NEHCIP was so welcome:  she taught its leaders how to secure emergency grant funds that will help the most vulnerable among us.

Another intern, the University of Chicago’s Joshua Lam, worked with Send A Cow to train farmers in financial literacy and business planning.  Joshua worked with over 300 farmers to make their businesses more profitable and suggested long-term investment ideas to help them grow.  As I speak, Mabel Smith, an engineering student from the University of Alberta, is working to improve water quality in Kakamega — and bettering the lives of all who live here.

Your gift helps funds these initiatives, which have never been more important than they are right now. Please support our work today!

Very best,

Priscilla
