Dear Colleagues,
Reference: Call for Contributions: "Encyclopedia of the Sustainable
Development Goals: Transforming the World We Want"
As the process of industrialisation progresses and the associated
problems related to it
such as biodiversity depletion, climate change and a worsening of health
and living conditions- especially but not only in developing countries
- intensify, there is a perceived needed to search for integrated
solutions to make development more sustainable. The current model of
economic growth used by many countries, heavily based on the
exploitation of natural resources, is not viable and there are many
evidences which show that a more careful, i.e. a more sustainable
approach to the use of our limited resources, is needed.
The United Nations has acknowledged the problem and among other
measures, it
produced a set of document at the latest UN Conference on Sustainable
Development (Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June 2012. In
September 2015, the UN General Assembly approved the “2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development”. On 1st January 2016, the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
officially came into force. The goals cover the three dimensions of
sustainable development: economic growth, social inclusion and
environmental protection.
There are to date no comprehensive high caliber, peer-reviewed and truly
international publications, addressing the SDGs in an integrated way.
Therefore, the "Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals:
Transforming the World We Want" is being published. The Encyclopedia
encompasses 17 volumes, each one devoted to one of the 17 SDGs.
The SDGs are:
• Goal 1 End poverty in all its forms everywhere
• Goal 2 End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and
promote sustainable agriculture
• Goal 3 Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
• Goal 4 Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote
lifelong learning opportunities for all
• Goal 5 Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls
• Goal 6 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and
sanitation for all
• Goal 7 Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern
energy for all
• Goal 8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth,
full and productive employment and decent work for all
• Goal 9 Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable
industrialization and foster innovation
• Goal 10 Reduce inequality within and among countries
• Goal 11 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and
sustainable
• Goal 12 Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
• Goal 13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
• Goal 14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine
resources for sustainable development
• Goal 15 Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial
ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt
and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
• Goal 16 Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable
development, provide access to justice for all and build effective,
accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
• Goal 17 Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the
global partnership for sustainable development
Over the next 13 years, with these new Goals and the 169 targets that
universally apply to all countries, nations are expected to mobilize
efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle
climate change. This Encyclopedia will be instrumental in implementing
the SDGs, since it explains in depth the many terms associated with them.
Each of the 17 volumes contains 100 terms picked by a team of
international experts, which makes it the most substantial editorial
piece on the SDGs to date. With a total of 1.700 contributors from a
wide range of disciplines and from all continents, the Encyclopedia of
the Sustainable Development Goals: Transforming the World We Want is the
largest editorial project on sustainable development ever undertaken.
Apart from a team of 4 deputy editors and two editorial assistants, this
unique project is supported by over 70 Associate Editors from across all
continents, representing a wide range of subjects and disciplines.
We are seeking contributions from persons working in academia, industry,
NGOs and other representatives from the civil sector, who want to use
the opportunity provided by the Encyclopedia to share their ideas and
thoughts on the SDGs with a world audience.
The Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals: Transforming the
World We Want will be published by Springer, as part of the World
Sustainabilty Series: http://www.springer.com/series/13384. As a fully
peer-reviewed and fully indexed publication, contributions to the
Encyclopedia officially count as high-impact publications and can be
used for promotion and tenure purposes. It is also a concrete record of
scientific achievement, since this is the world´s most comprehensive
publications on the SDGs.
Further details on the Encyclopedia and how to make submissions are
available at:
https://www.haw-hamburg.de/en/ftz-nk/publications/encyclopedias/sdgs.html.
The deadline for expressions of interest to contribute (the 1.700 terms
are already allocated and the editorial team is seeking suitably
qualified authors to write on them) is 30th January 2018. Full
contributions are expected by 30th April 2018, so there is enough time
for writing quality contributions.
