Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR): News Update: A new leader for CIFOR, recognizing rural women, and what can be done about degraded land

JOIN THE MOVEMENT

At a time when our planet is facing increasingly daunting challenges, the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) — led by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) — will gather influencers from all over the world in Bonn with 1,500 participants, and 6,000 others expected online, to scale up sustainable solutions for integrated land use.

Confirmed keynote speakers of this year’s Forum include Robert Nasi, CIFOR’s new Interim Director General; Erik Solheim, Executive Director of UN Environment; and Wanjira Mathai, Director of the Partnership on Women’s Entrepreneurship in Renewables (wPOWER) Hub at the Wangari Maathai Institute.

Interactive sessions will be hosted by diverse organizations including the World Bank, World Resources Institute (WRI), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Global Canopy Programme (GCP), PUR Project, Rare and Rabobank.

A host of innovative new initiatives will be launched at the event in Bonn, including the UN Environment Program’s Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, which seeks to unite the world's major faith communities for the protection of tropical forests.

“THINK LANDSCAPE” COURSE IN BONN (DECEMBER 11-22)

Landscapes worldwide are increasingly shaped through global trade, market development, resource exploitation and climate change. The landscape level is more than ever recognized as the entry point to negotiate land-use options with multiple stakeholders, mediate conflicts and promote collaboration.

Join an exciting two-week course in Bonn (December 11-22), titled “Think Landscape”, hosted by the Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation on the sidelines of the GLF. All course attendees will receive free entry to the Forum. Additionally, the GLF will support five participants through its need-based scholarships.

The curriculum was built in collaboration with CIFOR, the Center for Development Research (ZEF), the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) and the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) led by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

GLF DIGITAL SUMMITS

GLF Digital Summits are more than just webinars. They present a novel way to engage in dialogue with diverse communities of practice on landscapes. Together, help define the best practices, approaches, challenges and opportunities to integrated land use.

The first Digital Summit, Fires, haze and health – applied research, collaborative design and prototype development, had 108 participants, and the second Digital Summit, Effective tools for understanding, managing and accelerating impact, received more than 400 subscriptions from all over the world.

From 1 November 2017, Dr. Robert Nasi is taking on the role of Interim Director General of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). He replaces Dr. Peter Holmgren as Director General for the past five years.

Dr. Nasi is no newcomer to CIFOR, having been with the Center for more than 20 years, holding a variety of research and senior management roles, most recently as Deputy Director General for Research. He has been a part of the evolution of CIFOR’s innovative strategy to bring forests to the fore in the global climate and development agenda.

In an interview with Forests News, he speaks about his decades of experience with CIFOR and in tropical forestry research, and lays out plans for the future.
