The holy month of Ramadan is likely to begin on Thursday, May 17, this year, the Sharjah Centre for Astronomy and Space Sciences has said.

The first day of Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of the holy month, is also expected to fall on June 15, the centre was quoted as saying by local media reports.

The fasting period – from sunrise to sunset – during Ramadan in the UAE is expected to last 13 hours and 25 minutes at the beginning of the month, said Ibrahim Al Jarwan, deputy director general of the Sharjah Center for Space and Astronomy.

The days will then extend to 13 hours and 42 minutes and later reach 15 hours by the end of Ramadan, he added.

Meanwhile the temperatures during the holy month are expected to range between 41 degrees celsius and 26 degress.

The UAE’s moon-sighting committee will confirm the official starting dates for Ramadan and Eid.

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is a time when Muslims across the world fast from sunrise to sunset. The end of Ramadan, when the new moon is sighted, marks Eid Al Fitr.
