Why The NDC Must Abandon The Old Politics

It is most unfortunate that the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) leadership still do not understand clearly that to counter the current regime, they must abandon the old politics, and make ordinary people the focus of their politics.

The question is: What will make it possible to transform the lives of the millions of aspirational Ghanaians who want to join our nation's expanding middle class? We have culled an email message from the UK monetary reform campaign group, 'Positive Money UK', for the NDC's leadership's  benefit.

If they are wise, they would definitely send a team of young turks who are rising stars in  the worlds of business and economics, and get them to attend the September 15th #ChangeFinanceRally  event in London  - and return to set up a think-thank to advice the NDC on monetary reform that will help transform the lives of ordinary Ghanaians and SME businesses. To be relevant in a new era, the NDC must abandon the old politics. Simple.

Please read on:

"Dear Reader,

Ten years ago, the collapse of a few reckless big banks caused a decade of misery for people and communities all over the world.

On Saturday 15th September, the day it all started, hundreds of us are gathering outside the Bank of England to say enough’s enough. Our politicians and central bankers have had ten years to fix our broken economic model and they’ve failed. Not on our watch will they waste another decade of our lives. Kofi, please will you join us?

Students, retired people, workers, trade unions, charities, campaign groups, journalists and economists - together we’re building a critical mass of public support to make ourselves heard by our politicians, central bankers and the media who’ll be there to film us. We want make sure the next ten years are different - and the more of us there, the more likely that’ll happen.

On 15th September 2008, the financial services firm Lehman Brothers collapsed. This was ground zero for the global financial crisis that caused recession to spread across the world. It caused the rise of austerity politics in the UK, which meant ordinary people, communities and businesses have suffered a decade of misery for a crisis we didn’t create.

At the same time our government bailed out the banks with more than £130bn of public money, on the promise that they’d clean up the banking sector. But that hasn’t happened. The big banks are still playing by completely different rules to everyone else - beset by scandals, gambling with our money, paying out huge bonuses and neglecting small businesses and communities. [1]

So not only have our politicians failed to fix banking, but we’ve lost a whole decade to insecure jobs, rising inequality, and a stifling lack of investment. If thousands of us come together at this rally, we will send a message to our most powerful media and politicians: enough’s enough.

Please join us at the rally to help make 2018 the end of austerity and a broken economic model, and the first year of a brighter decade for us all:

Yes I’ll come to the #ChangeFinance Rally
