Each person’s profession started somewhere, and this year’s Bay Area Corporate Counsel winners are no exception. Several of them were inspired to enter the law profession by someone special.
For Jennifer Chaloemtiarana of Castlight Health, it was her father: “I spent several years after college trying to figure out ‘What do I want to be when I grow up?’
“The answer was right in front of me: my dad, Ben West, is a semi-retired real estate lawyer. When I was a kid, his eyes would light up when he would talk about a deal he had put together,” said Castlight’s general counsel and chief compliance officer. “I wanted a career that made my own eyes light up, and that would give me unique skills to invest in the community.”
Our Bay Area Corporate Counsel winners this year handle everything from human resources to fundraising, global marketing to intellectual property matters … and in the case of David Kelly, scouting professional basketball players for the Golden State Warriors.
The 18 honorees in the 2018 Bay Area Corporate Counsel Awards were honored on March 1 at the Four Seasons hotel in East Palo Alto.
Brunei-based artist Fernando Mendoza Sison created the watercolor sketches of the winners included in the gallery above. A retired architect, he sketches watercolors and architecture as a freelance artist.
These are the lawyers who are changing the business world and, in many cases, steering companies through uncharted territory. The responsibilities they’re asked to take on daily illustrate why they have risen to the top. We would like to congratulate all of our winners.
In profiles published in print and online on March 2, you’ll meet lawyers such as our Lifetime Achievement winner Jim Shaughnessy, who is responsible for all legal affairs at Pleasanton-based Workday. You’ll also meet the rest of our Bay Area Corporate Counsel honorees, including one who started rowing crew last year, and another who was inspired to become a lawyer when she was in the fifth grade.
This is just a small sampling of the stories of our Bay Area top corporate counsel candidates.
A special thank you to the past Bay Area Corporate Counsel winners who helped us judge this year: Kirupa Pushparaj, Square Inc.; Mike Zukerman, CSAA Insurance Group; Robin Schulman, New Relic; Olga V. Mack, Clear Slide Inc.; Conor French, Funding Circle; Kristin Major, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise; David Saunders, CloudFlare Inc.; Jennifer T. Miller, Gigamon; and Douglas Solomon. They provided invaluable expertise and insight in evaluating the many nominations we received. The final decisions, however, rest with us at the Silicon Valley Business Journal and the San Francisco Business Times.
