The World Bank’s Laura Tuck, Mars’ Howard Yano-Shapiro, Chief Tashka, leader of the Yawanawa indigenous people in Brazil and other financial experts and policymakers are gathering to tackle the challenge of funding the restoration of more than 2 billion hectares of degraded land worldwide, a footprint larger than South America. Land degradation is estimated to cost the global economy up to $4.5 trillion a year, while economic benefits of restoration efforts are an estimated $84 billion a year, according to a 2017 research paper published in Environmental Research Letters, and statistics from World Resources Institute. Private investment can play a critical role in reversing the 7 million hectares of tropical forest landscapes that are cleared and degraded each year and putting livelihoods at risk, triggering global warming, mass migration and conflict.
Streamed live from World Bank facilities in Washington, D.C. conference will include the following:
Dragons’ Den pitches include International Woodland Co., an investment firm managing almost $5 billion in land assets, for a $150 million pitch in a bid to secure business financing and partnerships for a 15-year Treenewable Climate Fund.
