Porsche and Audi sports cars were among the cargo that sank with the cargo ship Grande America after it caught fire in the Atlantic Ocean last week, it has emerged.

As PTI reported at the time, the Grande America, owned by Italian shipping company Grimaldi, caught fire approximately 150 miles southwest of the French port of Brest in the Bay of Biscay.

The blaze was put out by the HMS Argyll of the Royal Navy and 27 seafarers onboard were saved.
A recent Port Technology technical paper looked at the future of shipping, including how ports are managing the trend towards mega ships

Despite extinguishing the fire, the vessel sank later on March 12, and took an estimated 2,000 vehicles with it, including Porsche’s exclusive 911 GT2 RS and a number of Audi A3, A5, Q7, RS4 and RS5 models.

At the time of the fire, the vessel was on its way from Germany, where the cars had been made, to Morocco, from where they would have been delivered to customers in Brazil.

As well as the cars, the vessel was also carrying 45 containers of contained material deemed to be hazardous, according to Euronews.

This included approximately 10 tonnes of hydrochloric acid and 70 tonnes of sulfuric acid. Euronews also reported that 2,200 tonnes of fuel could have leaked into the sea amid fears of an oil slick hitting the French coast.
