Train Commuters Could Pay For Tickets With Their Faces, Minister Reveals

An Australian minister has proposed for commuters to make payments using facial recognition technology in the near future.

Andrew Constance, New South Wales minister for transport and roads, made a speech at the Sydney Institute on Tuesday saying, “I am confident we will… see frictionless transport payments,” adding that the transport system could be using “facial recognition technology to scan customers who’ve opted in and linked their Opal account.”

Passengers currently use their Opal cards to get through gate barriers. With the new technology, which Constance compared to Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’, people will no longer have to pause and think about what to do next.

However, Australian Privacy Foundation chair David Valle told BuzzFeed News that facial recognition can be highly dangerous and breach people’s privacy and personal information security, adding that it should not be used unless regulated.



He believes it might open a Pandora’s Box, as the government would be able to track people by knowing “every trip that you are on.”

Constance further predicted that digital identity verification would be “integrated with biometric recognition,” such that someone’s “face, retina, breath, gait or voice” can all be read and used to enter into buildings. This could help check up on the wellbeing of people as well.

The potential dangers of the technology can unfortunately be greater than the benefits, as biometrics belong to people for life—they can never change, making it ever-easy for them to be tracked down.
